چکیده

M any lung diseases, such as severe asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cystic fibrosis (CF), bronchiectasis and infiltrative pulmonary diseases are associated with chronic neutrophilic inflammation. These diseases are common, can be severe and, together, represent a major economic burden and worldwide public health challenge. In addition to chronic handicap, these diseases also feature recurrent episodes of acute worsening of inflammatory symptoms, known as exacerbations, a leading cause for progressive lung impairment. Prevention and prompt management of exacerbations is strongly recommended since they often influence disease prognosis.

A Concept Suggestion on the Effect of Cigarette Smoking in Inflammatory Destruction of Gingiva

Dear Editor, Cigarette smoking has destructive effect on periodontal tissue. The rates of loss of periodontal attachment and recession of gingival are higher in smokers than non-smokers (1-2). Previous studies on the inflammatory immune responses in smokers’ periodontitis have mainly focused on the role of neutrophils. Tumor necrosis factor–α, prostaglandin E2 and matrix metalloproteinase...

Targets of Neutrophil Influx and Weaponry: Therapeutic Opportunities for Chronic Obstructive Airway Disease

Neutrophils are important effector cells of antimicrobial immunity in an acute inflammatory response, with a primary role in the clearance of extracellular pathogens. However, in respiratory diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), there is excessive infiltration and activation of neutrophils, subsequent production of reactive oxygen species, and release of seri...

Suppression of severe airway inflammation with non-toxic dietary nutrients in histamine-challenged guinea pigs: A comparison with Ibuprofen

We hypothesize that selected combinations of nutrients commonly encountered in the human diet, suppress asthma-associated airway inflammation more effectively than currently available anti-inflammatory medications. Here we demonstrate that biflavones and terpenes, distributed widely in human diet (in this case derived from Ginkgo biloba) synergize with the carotenoid antioxidant astaxanthin and...

Ceramide-1-phosphate inhibits cigarette smoke-induced airway inflammation.

Sphingolipids are involved in the pathogenesis of inflammatory diseases. The central molecule is ceramide, which can be converted into ceramide-1-phosphate (C1P). Although C1P can exert anti- and pro-inflammatory effects, its influence on cigarette smoke (CS)-induced lung inflammation is unknown. We aimed to clarify the role of C1P in the pathogenesis of CS-triggered pulmonary inflammation and ...
